History

In 1995 Dr. Alan Goldsmith established the Jewish Renaissance Foundation (JRF) based in Perth Amboy. The Jewish Renaissance Foundation, a non-profit, non-secretarian humanitarian organization, responded to the well-documented need for healthcare for thousands of households in Middlesex County (Perth Amboy) by designing an innovative healthcare program called Operation Lifeline USA. The JRF medical program provides access to health and dental care with special emphasis on households with income just above the poverty level but too high to qualify for federal and state assisted programs.

The Jewish Renaissance Foundation, through interactive health fairs and referrals to physicians and dentists, serves approximately 8.000 individuals per year. The JRF also provides individuals with prescription drugs, eyeglasses, and hearing aids. Through Dr. Goldsmith's efforts, the Jewish Renaissance Foundation developed the Perth Amboy Health and Human Services Consortium. This group meets monthly, discusses the needs of the community, and fosters collaborative efforts from within. It is because of this group that the JRF began its School Base Youth Services program. This program is located at the Perth Amboy High School and addresses the needs of the youth in the community, including teen pregnancy, English as a second Language counseling, and leadership training.

The Jewish Renaissance Foundation Operation Hope program addresses youth ages 16-20 who do not have a high school diploma and are economically deprived. These youth are given the opportunity to earn their GED or need ESL (are salaried for attending school). They are also given on-the-job training and are salaried for this as well.

The Jewish Renaissance Foundation developed an annual Domestic Violence Symposium geared specifically to educators and social workers; a full day is devoted to specific subjects relating to domestic violence in the home, office, school, etc.

Due to the high number of people with autism in New Jersey, Dr. Goldsmith developed a social and recreational program for teens with special needs. The program, called Jacobs' Hands, provides them with a social and spiritual environment where friends are formed and programs have been formulated to meet their special needs.

Dr. Goldsmith's reputation has spread beyond the United States, and due to his efforts the JRF has combined today's medical and educational talents and resources to provide this knowledge to developing countries that are unable to meet the needs of their populace. Through Operation Lifeline International, the JRF leads volunteer physicians, dentists and educators on missions to crisis-ridden areas around the world. The mission is based on invitation by a foreign government and/or invitations by various groups of concerned individuals who identify needs the JRF might fulfill.

For six years, the Jewish Renaissance Foundation has tried to meet the needs of communities throughout the Middlesex County Area and continues to address the issues that arise.

In July 2002, under President Bush's Faith-based Initiative, the Jewish Renaissance Foundation Medical Center was selected as the first Federally-qualified Health Care Center in the country.
